HOW BYT began

Founded in 1989 by Chris Rooke.

Founded in November 1989 as part of the newly established Performing Arts Development Service (PADS) next to Barnsley FC, BYT has grown and evolved into the remarkable group it is today. Initially formed to provide the young people of Barnsley with the opportunity to explore the joys of performing, BYT quickly became an instant success in an area where few drama groups existed.

BYT offers young people diverse experiences: the chance to meet others from various backgrounds, make new friends, collaborate on creating performances, and engage in enjoyable evening activities that foster fun and creativity. Through these experiences, participants develop their confidence, introduce others to the magic of drama, and unleash their potential.

In addition to local performances for parents and community members at local theatres, BYT began touring plays and musicals to primary schools throughout Barnsley every summer, which were met with great enthusiasm from students and parents alike. The group also participated in drama festivals during the summer holidays in Cornwall, London, and Edinburgh, where they camped and cooked for themselves. Weekend trips to London provided opportunities to see West End shows, participate in workshops, and explore the city.

These opportunities and activities were previously unavailable to the young people of Barnsley, and BYT's ability to provide such enriching experiences has made it a cherished institution.

Now in the capable hands of Jack Riley and based at St John's Parish Hall, BYT continues to thrive as a registered charity, ensuring that generations of young people can benefit from the transformative power of the performing arts.
